Does the author show a strong command of language, or does the excerpt have distracting errors? Does the excerpt read smoothly, with few or no confusing sentences? Does the author make effective use of character or narrative voice that fits the POV(s) they establish in the excerpt? Is the voice engaging? Does the cadence of the writing flow appropriately for the mood the author intends to create? Is the excerpt paced effectively, neither rushed nor laboured? Do they use description in a manner organic to the tone of the story?
CHARACTERS
Appeal, dimension, uniqueness.
Does the excerpt establish an interesting character or set of characters? Do you care about the character(s) situation by the end of the excerpt? Do any of the characters elicit a significant emotional response in the reader, whether positive or negative? Did the author present compelling stakes, or allude to them in a way that piqued your curiosity? Does every scene provide some source of tension or significant development?

Does the excerpt contain relevant details to help ground the action in a location? Is the setting appropriately interesting or unique for the genre of story? Are the elements of the world building in the excerpt consistent? Can the reader begin to glean a sense of the society in which the story takes place?
SYNOPSIS
Details, comprehension, story arc, character arc.
Does the synopsis read well? Is the character and story arc well represented? Does it portray enough information or details? Does the reader have an adequate comprehension or understanding of the whole story and pacing layout?
